American Gods by Neil Gaiman

3.0

I LOVE Gaiman's writing. And since American Gods is his most popular book, I think I may have had unfair expectations.

This book was good. For me personally, it was not great, but it was definitely good. It was long which is why it took me over a month to finish. Gaiman is excellent at descriptions and intrigue, but occasionally in this book it became a dry and tedious. Sitting here after just finishing the epilogue, I feel more confused by this book than anything. I feel like there were parts I must've misunderstood, or things I didn't quite catch in all the descriptions. However, I have always been intrigued by mythologies, and Norse mythology has always been my favorite, so I couldn't quit. I had to finish. And I'm glad I did. I love Gaiman's work, and though I can't say American Gods was my favorite, it definitely was a solid read.

If you are into mythology and if you enjoy deep reads with carefully thought-out descriptions-- this is the book for you! However, if you are looking for an easy-breezy summer read, I would save this for another time where you can devote a lot of thought to it.
