Ash by Malinda Lo
3.0
My love of fairy tales made this a must-read and once I had it in hand, apparently a must-read-now, and it's a solid 3.5 in that the prose is pretty, the characters are solid, and I love the badass huntresses. It doesn't stray far from the standard-yet-updated-a-little Cinderella canon, and perhaps not-so-oddly enough, I held Drew Barrymore's Danielle (of Ever After) in my head a lot as I read this. Still, I did love the conflict of old tales and new science, the huntress lore, the fairy tales that sort of became a complicated mating dance, and yes, I really desperately wanted Ash to choose the sweet lady love because I think girls are pretty and smell nice, and strong, badass women make my knees weak; sue me.
All in all a sweet little story that doesn't add a lot to the old fairy tale, but is worth reading if you're a junkie like me. And I'm definitely down to read Huntress when I get a chance.
