Poe's law tells us that a sufficiently sophisticated satire of a form is indistinguishable from an authentic example of that form. Dan Simmons' Hardcase is just such a book. Is it a satire of men's action novels, written with wild and shocking violence, or is it just a slightly-more-modern of such a novel. Frankly, I don't care. It's a wild ride.
In a real world where black and white distinctions aren't usually easy to make, and real people get hurt by inconsiderate decisions, it's fun to read a book where we know the main character will probably do the right thing and where the villains are clearly marked as such. This isn't really an edifying book, but it's a hoot.

Graphic: Gun violence, Violence
Minor: Sexual assault
This book is written in an old-school hard-boiled way, reminiscent of Mickey Spillane. It's full of objectionable stuff.
