A re-read was in favor of this book, after all.
It is definitely a very intriguing fantasy world - a mix between Tolkien's Middle-Earth and Slavic mythology if I were to name it - with Geralt, the main character, being the most mysterious element of it for sure. I did, however, had some issues with how the writing style alternates between 'the olden language' and modernity. It just didn't mix well for me. At times it made me roll my eyes and I don't think that was the desired effect.
Geralt and Yennefer? I was so on board. But then it all happened so quickly I was like, 'WHAT.' I would have liked a liiiiiittle more build-up. You know me, the build-up queen.
[below thoughts when it was read for the first time, in 2012]
Very original, long neglected fantasy of a very unique narrative voice. Having read the first installment I can't wait to start reading the remaining six one by one. It definitely was a smart choice to finally give in.
