Killer in High Heels by Gemma Halliday

2.0

The HIGH HEELS MYSTERY series is one I stumbled upon in my effort to read more free and cheap e-books on Amazon. Now, the first one was a bit goofy and silly, but cute enough -- so I gave #2 a shot. I think the whole airhead shoe-obsessed detective who miraculously gets herself out of every possible dangerous situation in life is probably a bit too out there for me in this novel.

The story starts with Maddie receiving a message on her answering machine from her father, who abandoned the family years back and has pretty much been out of the picture until now. Apparently, Maddie's dad is in massive trouble, but that's all she knows because the message ended with a gun shot -- and then silence.

So Maddie, being the ever impulsive diva with no regards for personal safety or logic, heads to Vegas to track down her dad -- and soon has a run in with a confusing world of drag queens, knock-off designer shoes and oh yeah, the Mafia.

Over the top ridiculousness ensues on every page as Maddie, a girl more interested in making her lip-waxing appointment on time than in possibly considering the dangers of taking on the Mafia without proper brain cells or ammunition, somehow manages to save the day again and get herself out of another handful or two of deadly situations.

As I've said before, I don't like mysteries -- and I'm thinking now I like them a little bit less. I love chick lit and I don't mind intrigue, but something has to feel a little bit realistic. It just didn't work for me in KILLER IN HIGH HEELS. But, I've already purchased the next 3 books in the series -- so I may still review those later. Not sure yet.
