Between Life and Death
by Jaclyn Kot
I absolutely could not put this book down, it was an amazing read! I received this as an ARC for an honest review.
Sage is a character that I find easy to love and relate to. She has a found family whom of which she cherishes above all else. She is cursed, and stands on the precipice of wanting to stay alive and fighting back against the crowns extermination of people like her. To his credit, her brother Kaleb, does his fair share of keeping her on the "alive" side of the precipice.
Sage's life quickly descends into chaos as her brother is conscripted for a war, launching Sage into an escapade with tall, dark, and scary Von.
The supporting characters in the Rebel group are all developed well, and all fit well together as a second found family for Sage. I'm a sucker for when the guy is OBVIOUSLY obsessed with the girl first. It does become obvious who he really is (no spoilers here) but it didn't detract from the story. Same idea for Sage.
The world building was beautifully done, I felt like I was able to smell, feel, and see the things the characters were experiencing.
This book had a lot of slow burn smoldering, as well as an appropriate amount of spice; nothing felt added for the sake of a spicy pepper.
Again, this was an easy 5 star rating: I couldn't put it down, I will continue to recommend it, I'll buy the paperback when it's released, and I keep thinking about how much I already need book 2!
