The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

5.0

The kind of book about a chosen family that immediately welcomes the reader in and doesn't let you go.

What a sweet book. A criticism I've read is that the pacing is uneven, with the majority of the action crammed into the last few chapters, but the title of the book warns you that this would be the case. You're about to join the crew on the long way to their destination, so you have the privilege to embed with them and take your time learning to love them. Then you get to the small, angry planet, and you get the action expected from a sci-fi book. It's truly about the journey, not the destination, in character-driven novels.

The metaphors for queer and trans people, racism, etc etc were a bit heavy handed at times, but I loved them all enough that I didn't mind.
