The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi

5.0

The Henna Artist was everything I’d hoped it would be and more. The story follows Lakshmi, the henna artist of the title, and begins when she is well-established in Jaipur where she has found success working for some of the city’s wealthiest families. She has dreams of more when the sister she didn’t know she had shows up, along with her abusive husband whom she had fled from many years ago.

I was immersed in Lakshmi’s world from the moment the story began. And I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the art of henna as well as traditional herbal remedies. But mostly this was Lakshmi’s story and watching her make mistakes and learn and find peace with her past in order to step fully into her future was a pleasure to read.

Books set in India or about the Indian experience living in other countries is a subject I can’t get enough of. The Henna Artist is now going on my list of favorites in this oeuvre.

A beautiful story of a woman’s journey to acceptance of herself.
