In order to appreciate this story, you need to try to see the world with Bruno's eyes. Forget what you already know about concentration camps and WWII. Imagine being a child with parents that try to protect you from an outside world, a child where everything is a game and concept of war and death is not exactly clear.
Also, don't forget that during WWII, horrors of concentration camps were not a common knowledge, a lot of terrible things that went on were indeed a top secret. A child could have never guessed what was really going on.
I also found that the movie was exceptionally well done and a nice supplement to this book.
