The Lonesome Crown by Brian Lee Durfee
5.0
Wow, that was an insane ride! I had moments of doubt on this journey, but by the end, I loved The Five Warrior Angels trilogy. Is it the most polished, flawless series I've ever read? No. Is it wildly entertaining? Absolutely. Is it kick-ass fun? HELL YES!
Brian Lee Durfee nailed the landing with The Lonesome Crown. This nearly 1,100-page behemoth delivers an epic, nearly 400-page final battle that pulls everything together. I was frustrated that I couldn’t devour this climactic ending in one sitting! It was like a book within a book—a relentless page-turner. The final act was packed with twists, surprises, triumphs, and losses. Poignant character moments brought emotional payoffs, unexpected deaths shook me, and long-awaited arcs of vengeance and redemption found their resolution. The ending was everything I hoped for, striking the perfect note. I was genuinely surprised by the thought-provoking nature of Durfee's conclusion. Incredible.
I’ll be the first to admit these books aren’t for everyone. I’ll recommend The Five Warrior Angels to anyone and everyone, but I won’t be surprised if some don’t enjoy it. The writing isn’t the most polished. The sexual assault, violence, and gore are often over the top. Religious themes could be triggering for some. There are no clear-cut heroes or villains here. The books are massive and occasionally slow down too much. This final volume, in particular, could have been trimmed, especially where Durfee handholds the reader with unnecessary explanations or redundant exposition from different POVs.
But despite these flaws, this series—and especially this final installment—is an epic, wild, thrilling, and unforgettable journey. It's like the heavy metal version of fantasy, and I was all in. Durfee’s love for the genre pours out on every page. I’m thrilled he achieved his lifelong dream of publishing this series, and I’m looking forward to seeing him and this work gain more recognition as people discover its brilliance.
Oh, and Beer Mug! Kill him, Beer Mug! Kill him! I’ll never forget Beer Mug. He’s the best boy, EVER!
