Time and time again, social media will recommend a book to me, promising captivating reading and loveable characters, and time and time again, I’m always disappointed.
Brutal Prince follows Aida Gallo and Callum Griffin, the descendants of two of the oldest warring mob families in Chicago, and their ensuing marriage in an attempt to bring a truce between them.
This was not the book for me. I personally found it flat, emotionless, and boring. It felt like a couple of minor things happened, and then all of a sudden the book was over. There was no character development, no important stakes of any kind.
I despised Callum, the physically gave me the ick to the point that, multiple times through reading, I found myself rolling my eyes at various things he said. Not once did he feel like he valued Aida as a person, but only as a possession, even going so far as to say that she was his “doll”, to dress up and preen for him. Ew. Aida at least was mostly enjoyable as a character, smart and sassy if only slightly flat and lifeless.
This is the first of Lark’s books I have read, and sadly it will probably be the last. Not for me!
