Oof. I can usually get into a book with a lot of unlikeable characters, but this was something else. All the central characters are so awful that it was truly hard to enjoy the narrative. I wasn’t impressed with the writing (very repetitive), and the “twist” didn’t really have the payoff I expected. I was also irrationally bothered by the choice to give modern-day women in their late 20s/early 30s names like Bertha, Blanche, and Helen. This one just wasn’t for me!
