Bitch Planet, Volume 1: Extraordinary Machine by Kelly Sue DeConnick

4.0

I remember everyone talking about this a couple of years ago but I'm just now getting around to it because I apparently only read really popular series after they get cancelled. A really great concept that showcases a lot of the misogyny present in our society in a way that is, well ...'entertaining' I guess but also still very serious when it needs to be. I liked all of the little details like the pictures on the various screens and advertisements in the world and comparing those 'idealized' versions of women to the real women who are on Bitch Planet, there's definitely a lot going on in the background in this comic. Also the bios and info on all the women and the crimes they were imprisoned for which include things like being fat, being a 'bad mother', and sometimes literally just being born.

I'm sure that some people will think this series is just sooo far fetched but for me [and tons of other women I'm sure] it really hit close to home did a good job of representing all the ridiculous ways that women are expected to present themselves and how much shit they get for not performing an outrageous level of femininity every second of every day. I'm wondering how there can possibly be a decent conclusion with only one more volume but I'm still hopeful that some kind of closure will come from it.
