This book is a super loose, very dark and super spicy Peter Pan reimagining (not retelling) and it’s likely not for everyone. I read this on a whim because it was included with my audible and it was a mixed bag for me. The MMC, Hook, is a misogynist and a walking red flag who surpasses the tortured bad boy persona into the territory of deeply unwell and in need of a psych evaluation. I understand that Hook is a villain. He is a villain from start to end- cruel, violent, vengeful. There’s morally grey and then there is Hook- there’s no grey area here, he’s not any kind of hero. The FMC, Wendy, is depicted as vulnerable, empty-headed, helpless and everything she does or thinks is exclusively because of a man- either Hook or her father. The plot is, um, unrealistic, the relationship is a toxic one and the ending feels rushed. The spice is well written and if you’re just here for the smut you might be ok. Side characters are mostly forgettable and the book largely focuses on Hook, Wendy and Peter (to a lesser extent). Lots of trigger warnings here including torture, murder, and kidnapping. Mostly though, this was just ridiculous.
