Everything Is Tuberculosis by John Green

emotional hopeful informative inspiring reflective fast-paced

5.0

John Green writes and I read. Period. Did it matter that his next book was delving into the history of a communicable disease, a dive into nonfiction territory I would otherwise avoid? Nope. For a gal who inhales fiction like air, reading nonfiction has been rare, like a pebble tossed in an ocean. But, when John Green started talking all-things-TB on the vlogbrothers, I knew the next book would either have a MC fighting the disease or be another step into nonfiction territory for him. And, after reading and loving his first foray into nonfiction, Anthropocene Reviewed, in hardback, audiobook, and paperback (yes, you need to read all three—they all have content not in the other formats!), I was ready for whatever genre John Green threw at us.

As I read Everything Is Tuberculosis, I was reminded of everything I love about John Green as an author and advocate. He has a knack for explaining complicated issues in ways that make it easy to understand. He humanized what could have been a tedious topic (history of a disease?!) by introducing readers to Henry and following his journey in fighting TB. {Side note: Nerdfighters have known of Henry since Green first vlogged about him on YouTube. And, if you have not watched Henry’s YouTube channel, you need to.} Every time I read a John Green book, I’m in awe of his eloquence and his ability to evoke emotion.

Thank you, John Green, for using your “curious megaphone” to make our world a better place and encourage others to join you in that goal. And thank you to you and Hank for making it easier to do good, donate funds, and get in the fight through your videos, fundraisers, and The Good Store.
