Homer's Odyssey
by Gwen Cooper
Read this for my book club and it has sadly made me regret championing the 'animal stories' genre.
I'm sure Gwen Cooper is a nice person but this book, which posits itself as a book about an adventurous cat, is really just her memoir, with increasingly mundane cat anecdotes sprinkled throughout (there's a whole bit where she's just like...finding the cat food they like). I love animals but this felt like being trapped with someone telling me how amazing their pet is and adding a lot of poignancy to moments that were not deserving of it!!
Some bits were more compelling and I do like little Homer, but I think going forward I will keep my animal stories to books about pigs and particularly winsome rats.
