Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs
3.0

As other readers have noted, this "first book in the series" is not the beginning of Anna and Charles Cornick's story, which is frustrating for the average reader. I am not inclined to go on a hunt for the novella, or short story, or magazine story that introduced the mated werewolves of Patricia Briggs' Alpha/Omega series. It's irritating to be dropped into their story already in progress.
That said, this tale shapes up to be fascinating and scary, as it involves The Moor, Asil, a werewolf almost as old as the Marrock, Bran Cornick. Asil has been on the run from an enemy for more than 200 years, and it looks like that enemy is now baiting a trap to catch Asil... in Bran's Aspen Creek territory. Because Charles, Bran's son and enforcer, is injured, his new mate Anna refuses to let him go hunting for a possible rogue wolf alone. And what they don't know about Asil's enemy could get them, and maybe all of North America's wolves, in big trouble.
The tale is suspenseful... right up until it isn't. The denouement is pretty flat, in fact. In a "well, that was easy," way. Hmm. I'm also glad I read about pack bonds in the Mercy Thompson series first. I liked how those stories explored these bonds better than the reveal in this book.
I enjoy the characters, but I was disappointed in this book.
