Children of the Fox by Kevin Sands

4.0

Thank you to Penguin Teen Canada for sending me an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. So here it is, spoiler-free!

I really enjoyed the world building and magic system in Children of the Fox, and the main characters were all distinct and lovable.

The premise of the novel is that a group of children is recruited to pull off an extremely difficult heist for a powerful item, and each child has their own talent or ability that makes them valuable to the team. Out of all the characters, I found Gareth to be the most lovable because he’s shy, introverted, and loves to read. I also found Foxtail an interesting character, as we didn’t learn much about her or her past. I would love to read more about the in the future.

The only thing going against the novel (in my opinion) is that when the heist finally occurs, it almost felt like it should be the end. Reading this portion felt like reading the climax, but it wasn’t the climax. There was still much that happens afterwards, including the actual climax. I just feel like there was such a buildup to the heist, and then it happens but the story keeps on going even though it feels like it should be winding down. I can’t quite articulate the feeling, but that’s my best attempt at describing it.

Nonetheless, Children of the Fox was quite an enjoyable read for me, and I can’t wait to see more from this author!
