the first of the dune novels that has caused me to laugh out loud---multiple times, at that. as self-contained moments and phrases within the book, the humor is absurd. once they're taken within the full scope of the book (and the series for that matter), there's a gravity to what they represent that suggests frank herbert found no other method as effective in conveying the inescapability and simultaneous meaninglessness of time
