It felt amazing to be back in this world. The Poppy War was already dark and this book only gets darker as Rin gets swept into her next war pretty much right away rather than after a school training arc. This book started with a bang and then never let up with military action, followed by intense scene followed by military action, intense scene, military action etc. I was captivated the whole book but I did also feel overwhelmed at times by the fast pacing and how much tactical military stuff was in this one - I definitely prefer the intense scenes! I loved getting to see more character development from Kitay and Nezha. I thought they were wonderfully brought to life in this one. Rin was her fiery stubborn self the whole book and I like her a lot but admit I wanted to see a bit more journey or growth. Her big character realization happens right at the end, and it was exactly what I wanted when I finally got there but it did feel like her arc was simply a bridge to set up a bigger journey in book 3. I still really enjoyed this adventure and am ready to be destroyed by the third book.
