Going into this I had absolutely no knowledge of ancient life in the Aleutian islands. This book makes that very accessible, seamlessly weaving details of the culture and daily life into the story. It's easy to root for Chagak and Shuganan and many of the supporting characters. It's also easy to dislike the antagonists. Each character is distinguishable from the next. The plot moves along quickly and there's a definite climax and resolution. Happily, I discovered when I finished it that this is part of a trilogy. I'm definitely going to read the others if I can get my hands on them.
