The Unmarked Witch
by Miranda Lyn
This book is decent, but lacking real depth. It's a very entertaining read and has a great story. I enjoy the magic system, and while I feel the romance is mostly unbelievable, I'm fine with it too. With some extra effort made to really bring these characters and this world to life, it could have been excellent. Phenomenal even.
My issues with this series are around character and relationship development. There is none. Everytime we meet a new character they are instantly a part of the gang. Insta-love, insta-found family, insta-deep friendships. We don't watch relationships form and infer closeness through thoughts and actions as a reader, we are basically told "and then we were the best of friends".
Part of me feels like it's such a shame because this author has a good voice, and great ideas, but this reads like YA. I'll keep my eyes open for Miranda Lyn works in future though because I feel like this author has a LOT of potential. These books could have been GREAT, instead of just good.
I went on to read book 2 right away because this was an enjoyable read, but there is real room for improvement here.
