Queer: A Graphic History by Meg-John Barker

5.0

This is a (relatively) accessible introduction into queer theory. I really liked the illustrations that went along with the text and they're what puts my rating at 5 stars. The artwork makes the text engaging and often enhanced my understanding of the concepts being discussed.
I say that it's relatively accessible because, while it does a really good job of summarizing/explaining various complex ideas and theories, it doesn't make the content less academically dense. I suspect that's just the nature of queer theory. Although, it becomes a bit frustrating how often the "binaries" of thought are pointed out. But again, that speaks to how "academically-minded" queer theory is...it really likes to scramble your brain with the constant meta-discussion of the society we live in and the epistemology of how we talk about our experiences re gender and sexuality. This book does not attempt to remove any of that complexity, it merely presents a concise summary of the various concepts.
