Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
5.0
S C I E N C E! It’s cool!
There is a LOT of SCIENCE in this book. I am not a very science-smart person. In fact, there were a lot of words in this book that I needed to ask my husband, who is very science-smart, if they were real things. (See: tau ceti, xenonite, neutrinos) So I was convinced I would end up DNF’ing this book, given that it’s 500 pages, my reading time is precious and limited, and a lot of the time I didn’t know WTF he was talking about. However, that did not end up being the case. Yes, the SCIENCE! (which is what my brain yelled when it got reeeeeally into the weeds with explanations of…SCIENCE) tended to get very detailed and happened quite frequently, but I still enjoyed this book very much.
I’m proud of myself for sticking with it, because my god do I hate sci fi - no offense to those who love it, my brain just doesn’t compute when I need to severely suspend reality for long periods of time (ADHD??). But like the Martian, the lead character was funny and engaging, and the flashbacks to his time on earth and his time with Rocky kept me entertained.
I wouldn’t say this is one of my favorites and it may not end up being a favorite out of everything I read this year, even, but I couldn’t think of giving it anything less than 5 stars just for the originality and magnitude of the story alone.
