"The Golden Ass" by Apeuleius is the story of a man who gets into all sorts of hijinks after he usurps a woman's magical lotion which allows people to turn into beasts. While the woman turns herself into a bird, he manages to turn himself into a donkey instead. There are a bunch of tangential stories as well that generally relate to transformations of some kind.

The story was generally interesting but went on a bit too long.
