This is definitely a read that could have done with some content warnings at the front. I knew of some elements of the story but not some of the heavier content so was taken a little off guard. Despite the less than savoury elements this was well written to set up the world, just enough, not too much and then giving good insight into what the characters are like. No one is morally black or white which added to the realism of the story. I finished this and immediately needed to continue the trilogy.
