Matilda
by Roald Dahl
This was a darker story than I imagined it would be even though I've seen the movie and it's pretty similar.
Miss Honey is literally starving and is sleeping on the floor of her empty shack-like cottage, there's not even running water! Also, her aunt was terribly abusive to her as a child...even going so far as to drown/water board her.
I don't mind dark stories, so this didn't detract from the story for me, it was just really surprising!
I also really liked the themes in the story. I think that it's really interesting to have children rebelling against their parents and the adults in their lives because they're the ones who are unjust and behaving badly and I can really get behind the fact that Dahl is preaching that respect isn't just inherent because you're older, but that it has to be earned!
Dahl also makes some really great satirical comments about parenting and the education system and his sarcasm is some of the most biting that I've ever read...and this is a children's story!
I will definitely be checking out more of his books!
