The Ex-Girlfriend Murder Club: Three jilted lovers. One dead ex. Let the investigation begin by Gloria Chao
1.0
On paper, The Ex-Girlfriend Murder Club should have been the perfect read for me. It was marketed for fans of Dial A for Aunties, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It, and John Tucker Must Die, which I loved all three. It felt like the book was trying too hard to be funny, and because of that, the humor fell flat.
Kat, Olivia, and Elle team up to get revenge on their cheating ex by messing with his condo and sharing their misdeeds with the podcast Dish Served Hot. This is where everything started falling apart for me. Elle decided that she was going to smear his condo with her poop. We later found out it was dog poop. But overall, it was just gross. The amount of poop talk in this book was astounding.
I also didn't like how the book made Kat out to be the one Tucker Jones truly loved. Which is weird because he has a full wife and another girlfriend. Tucker had used her name and birthday combo for his passwords because she was so special to him. Yet, he's out her abusing his wife and taking advantage of Olivia. There is no consistency with the characters you think he would have shown that side to all of the women.
Also, the way Detective Birch handled the investigation was completely unrealistic. There is no way you would give that much leeway to a suspected murderer. He just let her go about nosing into police business. At one point, he even gave her a deadline of two weeks to find the real killer, or he would have to arrest her and Olivia.
I had figured out who the real murderer was about halfway through the book. What was supposed to be a big reveal was just meh.
Overall, I found The Ex-Girlfriend Murder Club to be a disappointment. I had really high hopes for this series, but sadly, I won't be continuing with it.
