The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

5.0

I will not go into any spoilers really, but I will say:
- I don't know if any other book (series) will top this one for me this year, what an amazing start
- It felt like reading Brandon Sanderson's books for the fist time: you are amazed by the world building, trying to remember the names of the places and the characters and when you feel that you have it under control, it suddenly shifts around you, just so you can scramble again and you LOVE it. And also: you are patting yourself on your back for figuring out a few minor mysteries and plot twists and the author is laughing at you like a maniac, because you are walking into their trap for the real twists that you didn't see coming
- Besides the military side of the fantasy, I really enjoyed the spiritual side as well and the philosophy
- The characters are unforgettable (the good and the bad and everyone in between)
- Reading this book felt like watching a train wreck, in the best possible way

Lastly: I hope there will be a dragon somewhere in the series
