The premise of the book was interesting and could have been a critique on true crime and how the media treats victims of major crimes. Instead, it leaned heavily on tired 80s slasher movie tropes (a remote cabin! Drunk college students! A shy virgin being pressured to have sex! Escaped mental patients!) and characters making awful and unrealistic decisions in the name of moving the plot forward.

I felt that the author also didn’t do a huge amount of research in to any of the topics brought up - Quincy saying that all the true crime blogs are run by men was one that stuck out to me, because at this point it’s a meme how much white women in their 30s become obsessed with true crime. A lack of knowledge about journalism in general also stuck out to me. There is no good reason why two women having a conversation should make the front page of a New York newspaper.

It was entertaining enough to finish but ultimately tried so hard to come up with a shocking third act twist that the ending just fell flat without much to back it up.
