The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

5.0

i don't have words to describe the hate u give.
this is a book that is so incredibly moving and so...significant. i don't want to say interesting because that is not the word to describe this book. the word is important. the message the hate u give portrays isn't new. it's not a new, or novel concept. no, this is a message that has been trying to make an impact for longer than anyone could've ever expected. khalil's story mirrors the horrors that so many others have had to face, some without a starr to be their voice. and that is terrifying.
this book doesn't sugarcoat anything. everything is told from the perspective of a 16 year old black female surviving in the world. as an asian teenager from the same world as her, i understand a lot of her thinking and mindset but i never would've or could ever expect or understand the reality the world is for her because of the colour of her skin. because of her age. because of her sex and gender and how she views herself.
this book was a MINDBLOWING eye-opener. i have been so blissfully ignorant of, i don't want to say problems or issues because that doesn't cover the magnitude of the battle that has been occurring in our world. and i want that to change.
the amount of eye-opening quotes or just sentences that stopped me dead in my tracks was concerning. the tears i shed were warranted. if you have not read the hate u give you need to go pick up a copy and read this right now. it will change your entire outlook.
i hope i didn't offend anybody with my ignorance of knowledge. that is not my intent with this review. I'm still trying to process and find the words to describe this book, because it left me without words. the realness of this book is what will draw you most to the story. starr is a character that amplifies so many voices. she is only human and she is young and she is relatable. she is real, not a "mary sue", she is starr. she was a witness. she is a voice. she is a light.
i loved this story. i hated this book. i cried to this novel. i screamed into the pages.
