Thorn by Intisar Khanani

4.0

Thorn is about a princess whose identity is robbed by a sorceress, and who seizes the opportunity to work as a goose girl, learning that both the kingdom and her betrothed are in danger. The heroine is sweet and humble. Her behaviours are consistent with someone who has been subjected to cruelty by her family, and the scenes with the prince and with her steed are compelling. The story is whimsical but becomes darker as it progresses. The book's message could have been subtler since it is mentioned repeatedly but overall this is a great fairy tale retelling.
