A haunting first telling of maybe the biggest supernatural myth in humanity. Told in understandable, yet moody, dark and poetic language. I loved the descriptions of the castle and the woods. There was the dawning understanding of Carmilla and her anagramms, the dread for Laura and the relief which was of course tinted with grief. The reader falls in love with Carmilla, as Laura did. The book is truly one that can plunge you into obsession. How difficult it is to portray a tale we nowadays can name 200 varieties of, and still make it captivating and morose. On a more trivial note: I loved that Laura and Carmilla were the same age as me and also the consistent theme of melancholy. The father is a very wholesome figure.
