It’s hard not to compare this to the magic of The Kite Runner. This book just didn’t have the gripping story telling that I had hoped it would. It’s honestly been sitting on my shelf for a hot minute because I just wasn’t sure if it would live up to the hype. And it didn’t. I didn’t dislike it - I think it gives an honest look at life in Afghanistan before and during the Taliban takeover and what life looks like for women. But it just felt disjointed. The need to tell it in parts, the need to tell it from different women at different times just felt abrupt and disconnected for me. I never really felt much more than basic sympathy for our characters. I wanted to love this one, but just didn’t.
