Claymore, Vol. 24 by Norihiro Yagi

3.0

If there's one thing that's confusing about Claymore is the fight scenes - I think that the lack of colour really brings down the capacity to understand who's fighting who, where, what happens when and so on. I do understand that the manga style is by default economical, but I think that even this series reaches its limits when two massive fights are done in parallel and they somehow involve the same creatures. Somehow.

So this part gets quite confusing. It keeps the story going, but it is of little value for me as a reader. That being said, the non-fight part is interesting - awakened beings jump in to help, and the explanations of Dae are interesting as well. I think that the volume itself is saved by Rubel and the finale.

Second reading: The battle between the super-abyssal-ones leaves even the author speechless. In fact, his own words show that he's overwhelmed by the situation he has created. „Has a monster come who surpasses the monster surpassing an abyssal one?” one of the characters asks, and I swear that's what happens, and as a reader I lost involvement completely.

But the finale saves a bit the situation; Rubel's twist confession in the finale is... it just misses. Of course, it doesn't help the fact that it plays with suggestions of rape - it doesn't help the fact that the entire series is filled with sexual innuendos that go nowhere and make no sense. The author basically tries now to dig himself out of a hole he dug for himself, and I confess it doesn't make much sense.

The quality of story-telling stays afloat, although it definitely is a lot weaker than a few volumes ago - it's hard to make a connection of any kind with the mega-super-over-abyssal-ones and it shows.
