The Kiss Curse
by Erin Sterling
I picked up The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling right after finishing The Ex Hex, and if The Ex Hex was a Halloween hallmark movie, The Kiss Curse is a Halloween sitcom episode. This story follows Gwyn, the owner of the cute witch store in the Salem-like town of Graves Glen has a new rival in town, Llewellyn “Wells” Penhallow. Wells has just opened his own witchy shop, right across from Gwyn’s. This story is full of rivals to lovers, witty banter, and swoon-worthy scenes perfect for fall!
While I did like the romance plot, the main plot fell short for me. Interwoven with the romance is the problem that Gwyn’s powers are fading and there is a mysterious new coven in town. This subplot may as well just not existed because it was in like 25% of the book. I think the concept would’ve been interesting had its purpose been properly used. In that, the book’s structure would’ve survived without it given the plot was hardly utilized until the very end. I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed by the final “twist,” it felt very rushed and ill-planned. I think this book suffers from an increased focus on aesthetic cohesion rather than structural cohesion.
A positive, I personally like Wells much better the Rhys. I think he and Gwyn’s chemistry was much more believable for me. Am I disappointed this wasn’t a Gwyn x Jane romance, yes. Will I survive, yes but begrudgingly. Despite its faults, I would recommend The Kiss Curse to anyone looking for a quick small-town romance.
