This is a great continuation of the series. We get both a wonderful HEA as well as some big developments in the macro plot. So while this could theoretically be read as a standalone, I don't think it should be. This is becoming a series that really needs to be read in order.

When Collector Mary showed up to the raider camp looking for Aury with a big gray beastie chained to her RV, Rig knows instantly that he has to help him. Even if it means leaving the safety of the camp and his friends to travel across the wastes without much of a plan. As they travel, Rig beings to learn even more about his beastie and becomes more determined than ever to set him free. But, when Mary's true motivations are revealed, things get more dangerous than ever, and Rig has to hope they can both make it out of this alive.

I really liked Rig in the previous book, but I absolutely adored him in this one. He's so much smarter than he gives himself credit for, and I love how determined he is to help Gloam (even before he falls in love with him) just because he knows it's the right thing to do. And, Gloam. He is such a sweetheart. And the perfect calming balance to a very hyper Rig. Because Gloam can't speak, they spend their time communicating via writing, and I really loved how their romance developed. And, I especially appreciated their conversations about consent and power imbalances.

Three Thoughts:
1. Mary is the absolute worst. (And when I picture her, I can't help but picture Dolores Umbridge which makes me hate her even more).
2. Even though the first part of this book overlaps with bits of The Rycke, it didn't find myself bored or wanting to skim. I think the author provided just enough information to ground the story without feeling like I was forced to relive the same information over again.
3. Aury being excited about finally having a beastie friend is about the cutest thing I've ever read in my entire life.

The monster/human found family of my dreams just keeps growing, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
