The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson
5.0
It's rare to read about a fantasy heroine but it's even more rare to read about one that isn't beautiful and skinny. I instantly fell in love with Elisa because she was a child that loved to eat, struggled with feeling beautiful in her body and didn't feel special. She was thrown into a world where she was expected to be a wife to a king that didn't think too much about her either.
Over the course of the novel, Elisa is forced to deal with the beginnings of a major war and become a leader to people. She slims down, falls in love with someone that saw her as special from the beginning, and fakes her confidence until it's naturally there and she is leading the way a queen should lead.
You'll probably cry at some point but man, Rae Carson is a wonderful writer. If you're looking to teach younger girls that they too can be badass queens, you should get them this book.
