Burning Butch by R/B Mertz

Woah. What a memoir. Honestly the book description captured my attention because I was raised and still consider myself Catholic, but clearly not the same type of Catholic upbringing as the author. And I have an interest in LGBTQ stories. This book seemed to promise a raw recounting of very difficult situations and navigating very difficult subjects—and it delivered. Subjects such as race, privilege, religion, theology, divorce, sexual abuse, homeschooling, gender, sexuality, morality, bullying, romance, depression, suicide, and of course, a thick layer of traumas underneath it all. It was difficult to read emotionally and mentally, but I also found it difficult to put down. It must have been painful and stressful on so many levels for the author to write, edit, and publish this book for the world to read. I’m glad I pushed past the uncomfortable and finished it.
