The main character of this story is a very optimistic single mom who is raising her daughter and stepson. Two years before the story begins, her husband, who was suffering from depression, goes to visit his mom hoping that a change of scenery will help and he never comes back. In the meantime, Jess must deal with the trials of single parenthood. Bad luck continues to plague her but she meets most of the challenges and is still able to maintain her optimism and belief in the good in others. There are several other plot points that made this a very entertaining read.
