Doctor Heartless by J. Saman

5.0

Exciting and entertaining! Landon is the grumpy Fritz, the guy who was widowed when his daughter Stella was a toddler and since then has been living in guilt over the death of his wife. She died in a car accident. He was adamant that he would never love again, and his only love was his daughter who was his reason for living. He’s the cardiologist among the Fritz doctors. Funny that he’s a cardiologist but he insists he has no heart left.

Elle divorced her famous golfer husband for mental abuse. The last two years of her marriage he had been horrible and she was done. She moved to Chicago to start a new life, got a job as a history teacher at Wilchester Prep. On her first day in Chicago, she had a one night stand with this gorgeous guy called Luca. She never expected to see him again. But next day, she moved into her new house and guess who is her new neighbor? And on top of that, she learns his name is really Landon and he was using his twin brother’s name. Instant hate! They decide they will hate each other and not talk.

Then Elle starts school, she’s loving it and turns out that Landon’s daughter Stella is one of her students and Stella gets very attached to Elle. Poor Landon is besieged by Elle everywhere he turns and what’s more, he’s more and more attracted each time he sees her.

This story was incredibly entertaining with all the side plots included. Stella’s story with Elle was very tender, she needed a woman’s attention and she got it in spades from Elle. There’s a low thrum of tension coming from Elle’s ex-husband who won’t stop calling and her parents who keep insisting she fix things up with the ex. Then her twin sister who is like the wicked witch of the west, also turns up calling. She’s besieged by the past when she wants to start a bright new future.

I loved the characters, the Fritz brothers already feel like family, and now Stella. I loved how Landon resisted and resisted and fell anyhow, like a sack of potatoes. When he finally stops resisting, the story turns so magical and romantic. This guy had it inside and it was festering and it was beautiful when he let go and start ripping those smiles. Lovely and tender story!
