Çalikuşu (the Wren): The Complete English Translation by Reşat Nuri Güntekin
5.0
I came across a new phenomenon whilst reading this book. Typically when I find a book I love, and let it be clear that I love this book, I become hooked and I cannot put it down until it is complete. With Çalikusu, there were times where I had to force myself to stop, because i wanted to savour the story. I didn't want it to end.
The writing is beautiful and it is impossible not to adore the character of Feridé, who is just so believable to me even despite the different era in which she is written. I'm sure she will forever remain as one of my all time most loved characters.
Exactly like the editor of this version, I first came across Çalikusu on Netflix (where it is named Lovebird). I loved the characters almost instantly (I was so pleased when later reading the book to realise Feridé was played to perfection). Whilst watching, I did some research, learning the show was based on a popular book. I knew, that as soon as I finished the show, I would want to read it. Unfortunately the show was cancelled before the story was completed, making me even more desperate to read the book to know Feridé and Kâmran's ending. As soon as I finished the show, I looked for a way to buy the book, but I could not find a copy of the original translation. Luckily I decided to search again a few months later, discovering this new translation had just been published. I am so grateful! It does not disappoint.
