This book is deep & beautiful & I loved it.
“Who am I, Word?
The prayer caught him by surprise. He hadn’t prayed in years.
He took a step back and dropped his hands. He’d never stopped believing in the Word. Rather, the same knot that muted his power seemed to reside in his soul. He could no longer hear the Word, see the Word or feel the Word. Like perpetual storm clouds forever hiding the Word’s presence from him.”
There are so many quotable words, & such beauty watching Brigid find out who she is. There are things she hides from everyone, even the adoptive mother she adores. There are things she doesn’t understand including what her purpose is & where she belongs. A life of poverty from a lack of identity she finds she has an amazing gifting in the midst of chaos, something she’d never choose and yet it makes her famous. Halfway through we meet Kaedan. Where Brigid group not knowing the Word, Kaedan deconstructed his beliefs at the loss of his parents. A friend & father-figure remained in his life and called him out from the mines to steer him to truth. Like Brigid, he does find out his calling & we see him step into it with courage, in spite of self doubt.
During all of this we are getting to know an evil that comes from distorted truth, but is enslaving masses. It’s evident by the end of the book that these two want good & so they will fight the evil no matter the cost.
It’s easy to see in this what it means to take up your cross, what it means to have your eyes open to the truth.
And… what an ending! Book 2 can’t get here soon enough!
