The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Daré
5.0
“Why are the women in Nigeria seem to be suffering for everything more than the men?”
A tale of a rural poverty and domestic slavery, I didn’t think I’d enjoy this book initially as it was written from the perspective of the protagonist in broken English. After a few chapters I was intrigued, and as the book progressed I couldn’t put it down. The plight of Adunni was emotive, as life’s adversities attempted to quieten her “louding voice”. Daré’s prose was lyrical and full of imagery, which served the wider purpose of bringing this story to life. It also shed light on the social standing of women - both rich and poor - and confronted some uncomfortable truths.
