I have such polarized opinions about this book! I didn’t grow up with it and am reading it for the first time at 22 after hearing about it for my whole life! It was definitely darker than I expected on if from such a young, YA writing style. But that would not have been a downside for me if a lot of time wasn’t spent on the Survival Show aspect of the Games. Survival plots might actually be my least favorite thing in all of entertainment. So I didn’t like those bits, but I really enjoyed the rest of the plot. It’s so fast paced, it felt like it flew by! But I thought all the characters got developed well, especially Peeta because I felt like he has a lot of layers. Katniss is a really good protagonist too. I liked the social commentary on reality TV and how we are often entertained by brutality. The prose wasn’t the best. Extremely stripped down and basic. The world building was good, but I had a hard time picturing everything because there wasn’t much description. So overall, a mixed bag, but I thought it was good.
