And Then There Were None
by Agatha Christie
It is important to note two things. First, even before reading “And Then There Were None”, I already knew who the killer was. Unfortunately, while searching for the title of the novel online, I stumbled upon a spoiler revealing the identity of the murderer (entirely my fault– I should have known better than to google a mystery novel without expecting spoilers). Second, I get scared very easily. I was aware that this book was darker than many of Christie’s other works, however, I felt compelled to understand the hype surrounding this book.
Throughout the book, I felt deeply unsettled, especially by the haunting repetition of the nursery rhyme, foreboding each of the ten deaths (which reminded me of the childish games featured in “Squid Game”). Honestly, I felt so disturbed, that after reading, I wanted nothing to do with the book. I just wanted to cleanse my mind with something light and comforting, whether it was a watching a silly sitcom or scrolling on TikTok. This novel was, without a doubt, a dark and chilling read.
Nevertheless, I would urge any fan of the mystery or thriller genre to read this book at least once in their lifetime. Despite knowing the ending, I found the story gripping and one of the most masterfully crafted mystery plots I have ever encountered.
