The Ravens by Danielle Paige, Kass Morgan

3.0

The premise for this book SUPER appeals to all of my interests: 1) witches 2) southern gothic 3) could it be classified as dark academia if it's set at a college??? Maybe so.

I would argue it takes about 100 pages in to get to the main plot of the story, but once you get into it things move much more quickly. I was never in a sorority at college, but I like the way this book frames the sisterhood and camaraderie between the girls — both good and bad.

There are a lot of characters to navigate, being set at a college, but the main two points of view we get are novice magician Vivi, who has no idea of her powers and enters the world of magic with some difficulty, and Scarlett, powerhouse junior sorceress. I appreciate the juxtaposition of the characters (well aware of magic vs not aware in the slightest, coming from magical vs nonmagical "aware" households). Despite a few hesitations, I'm going to give the sequel a try and who knows!
