Death in Venice by Thomas Mann
4.0

Spoilers! An extremely weird and great short story that I don't think you'd be able to write about today. It's a story about a man experiencing obsession, transforming from a rigid person of high morals into somebody who is depraved and is unable to stop himself from indulging his new mental state. It's a commentary on art, morals, and classical myth. Mann really shows how obsessed people can know what they're doing is wrong, and yet they can't help themselves from their own actions, regardless of their consequences. I'd be interested in reading a newer translation that modernizes the language a bit, but I like how playful Mann appears to be with language in this English translation anyway.
