A Darkling Plain by Philip Reeve

3.0

So the beginning was pretty good. And the end was what it should have been. But the middle was a bit of a mess. From plot holes and harping on the idea of communication barriers to the point of excess it drove me crazy. The main characters tried to stay true to themselves, but so many of the secondary characters were infuriatingly simple minded.

This series is in many ways the story of Tom and Hester, with all the other preachy bits a far second in importance. But so much is spent on how terrible humans are to the planet that it was really over the top for me. Maybe the kids it was written for need that though? Either way, the book was needlessly complex and preachy. So, 3 stars. Not the worst book in the series but not as good as the first.
