Three Things About Elsie by Joanna Cannon

5.0

There are three things you should know about Elsie. The first thing is that she’s Florence’s best friend. The second is that she always knows what to say to make Florence feel better. And the third thing… might take a little bit more explaining. 84-year-old Florence has fallen in her flat at Cherry Tree Home for the Elderly. As she waits to be rescued, she considers the charming new resident who looks exactly like a man she once knew – a man who died sixty years ago. His arrival has stirred distant memories she and Elsie thought they’d laid to rest. Lying prone in the front room, Florence wonders if a terrible secret from her past is about to come to light.

“That’s the job, then.” I LOVED this book! I think I loved all the characters, but my favourites were Florence, Elsie, Jack, Miss Ambrose, and, of course, Handy Simon. This was a lovely, sometimes sad, often funny story about ageing, with a mystery at its centre. I couldn’t stop reading; I just wanted to know what was going to happen next! It was very cleverly written and kept me guessing until the end. And I was completely blown away by that ending! It also had me asking the question, “Will Florence ever be rescued from that nonsense under the sideboard?”

I don’t think there was anything that I didn’t love about this book. It was emotional, beautiful and gripping! I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. Therefore, I give Three Things About Elsie 5 out of 5 stars!

I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys contemporary fiction, gripping mysteries, stories about ageing and confusion, relatable and lovable characters, and some dark comedy.
